Maria Escarlan making positive shifts in aged care.
Mobile Health Group’s (MHG) Local Legend initiative is in full swing. It has been rewarding for us to recognise the nominations that have been received. Maria Escarlan, a nurse practitioner based in New Plymouth is a valuable superstar that we’re excited to highlight.
She is passionate about supporting elderly to age positively. Maria recognises the importance of empowering both elderly patients and their families, ensuring that the later stages of life are approached with support, dignity, transparency, and the utmost respect and care.
Maria was nominated for our MHG Local Legend initiative, and we’re thrilled to celebrate the meaningful work she does in her community. She is directly involved with My Health Hub (MHH) service and frequently encourages a wide range of aged care nurses and health assistants to engage with MHH’s online training sessions.
The anonymous participant who nominated Maria as a Local Legend shared that she always goes the extra mile with enthusiasm and consistently follows up with attendees.
“She is always present during the online presentations and often initiates further discussion relevant to the topic during question time. Her enthusiasm is obvious, and her efficiency ensures the widest possible network of active participants for the study meetings.”
We asked Maria what she loves most about her role, and the deeper explanation of what drives her passion and purpose.
“Having been born and raised in the Philippines before coming to Aotearoa New Zealand where elders are the centre and strength of the family, I witnessed first-hand what it meant to ensure our elderly family members age positively.”.
“It’s important to me to share my passions and inspire other nurses to work to the top of their scope, especially in the aged care sector, as I do believe it is a specialised area”.
“We owe it to our elders to make sure that their hard work and determination for the generations after us is honoured by making sure they are cared for with dignity and respect while also empowering the patients’ families on how to best care and approach their loved one’s health and retirement.”
“I am so pleased to be supporting other fellow nurses by facilitating education sessions through My Health Hub and sharing the knowledge.”
If you recognise a person for their hard work ethic, their outstanding care or believe that they are a true Local Legend, don’t forget to nominate them. We’d love to hear from you!
