EDUCATION FOR GPs

Visiting the Mobile Surgical Unit

We welcome a range of health professionals on the Mobile Surgical Unit – Te Waka Hauora to observe and learn. The surgical unit is an ideal opportunity for rurally based healthcare professionals to conveniently access and work alongside experienced consultants and anaesthetists. The opportunity is particularly relevant for rural GPs, but also available to rural emergency services such as Hato Hone St John staff and fifth year medical students.

These visits are strictly controlled, must be prebooked (see form below), and are subject to patient consent on the day of visit.

A special opportunity for Rural GPs

Some rural GPs will take the opportunity to visit the surgical unit when their patients are having a procedure. In addition to  learning about the specific procedure, the surgeon will also cover the principles of surgery and treatment modalities, with some doctors performing the role of surgical-assist depending on the specialty.

Working alongside the anaesthetist also has significant benefits. Information covered by the anaesthetist may include airway anatomy, airway management, LMA insertion, nasal intubation and care of an unconscious patient.
