Rural conferences

Rural Conferences

Bringing together the voice of rural health has been a strong focus for Mobile Health. Over the last 15 years we have hosted 14 rural health conferences,  while we dont have any conferences currently planned, we continue to talk with other like-minded organisations to look for opportunities.

The Beginning – The 2005 Rural Health Summit

Mobile Health’s first rural meeting was the 2005 Rural Health Summit. This was the first major conference focusing on rural health in New Zealand. For the first time it drew together a wide range of people who worked in, or had a passion for rural health. Held at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium, more than 150 people attended the event.

The Early Days

The early meetings were very successful getting different rural groups and areas working together. The 2008 Rural Health Summit for example was saw the development of a working party by the managers of 24 rural hospitals to represent rural hospitals’ views and concerns. This group evolved to become the Rural Hospital Managers Association New Zealand (RHMANZ). Similar work was done during other symposiums to bring together rural hospital doctors and rural nurses.

Rural Nurses Meetings

Between 2010 and 2019 the focus of the meetings shifted rural nurses, and the meeting was rebranded the Rural Nurses Meeting. The meetings included a blend of informative and inspirational speakers mixed with hands on clinical workshops. The meetings provided rural nurses a unique opportunity to get together, share experiences, learn, and have a break from often demanding rural roles.

The meeting however is a victim of its own success. With rising costs, it became clear that future funding needs to be focussed on our core services, so 2019 was the last Rural Nurses Meeting in it’s current format.

2019 Rural Nurses Meeting

Our last meeting was the 2019 Rural Nurses Meeting held in Wellington in May 2019. It was the biggest Rural Nurses Meeting yet with 94 nurses from all over rural NZ attending the meeting in Wellington. The meeting included informative and inspirational speakers, mixed with hands on clinical workshops. Thank you to the presenters and attendees for making the event a big success!
